Right off the assembly line
hello everyone. first post, so forgive me if i do something wrong. i've got a new-ish computer - Xfx 680i SLi, Intel C2Q Q6600, 2gigs of Transcend Ram, Galaxy 9600GT, Cooler Master 500W PSU and CM Centurion 534 case. CPU cooler is a CM Geminii S, and the HDD and ODD are a Seagate 400G and Samsung 22X OctoEdge respectively. I assembled this computer last year myself.
I've recently come across a problem - a while back I started having what I think are overheating problems. when I start playing any game, after around 10 minutes - recently it's got lower - the computer just shuts off. Even when I run a lot of apps or try to encode a video. Recently, I changed the thermal paste and changed the stock cooler to the one given above. then I thought it would be working better. I had to reinstall Windows as I'd messed up my old installation by trying to delete a virus by booting up in Ubuntu and I kind of messed up some system files. By the way, the problem is not OS-specific - I've run XP, Windows 7 and Vista on, all have the same problem. Please help me, I can't wait to get back to gaming. mayday, mayday....... When I say it shuts off, I mean exactly that. The monitor goes blank and the power light on the chassis turns off. I've never seen anything like this, and i've been assembling computers since I was ten years old.(which, i just realized doesn't say much cause that was only three years ago.) Help a guy out, would ya?

oh wow...Xenforo!!!
A coolermaster extreme 600w and 650w is the same budget scaled down version of seventeam 500w which has 70% efficiency but on a silly operational temps of 25 degree celcius. Pretty much explains the credibility of cm 500w extreme since all extreme versions are tested on operational temps of 25 degrees celcius. I assume you have used isopropyl alcohol+ clean lint free cloth to clean the old thermal paste. Same goes for the copper base as well. I hope you are using bolt- through kits rather than push pins.
Other than that, let me know the ambience inside the case, temps on all 4 cores and how many case fans you have with their cfm rate as well. Also let us know the cfm of the cpu fan as well.

first go thru wid the basics ... i have a suspicion its the power supply ... cos everytime it seems to shutdown during power intensive operations ... so jus remove ur graphic card and other things tat arent necessary (like optical drive, any PCI and USB devices) , try booting ur comp again ... this will give u a better picture ... if possible , try getting another SMPS ....

incase u don have an onboard graphic card , try getting something wid passive cooling like the 6200 to do this test ... PM results

I think the cpu is overheating. So the system is turning off to prevant any dmage. Otherwise it could be GPU or PSU prob to.

But one guy in here has same problem when his mobos northbridge temps get too high on asus mobo.

So I think you should check your temps with both coretemp or realtemp
& with HWmonitor by running orthos stress test side by side. If possible post screenshots of those applications running side by side.
