HELP - Convert DVD (avi) to MP3 or any other AUDIO format

i have these avi video files in a dvd. I had to install divx plugin to run them in windows player. they are running fine.

now i need to convert these video files which are in .avi format to just audio format of least size.

1) which format should i convert them to? mp3? is midi possibile? is midi of least size?

2) which software should i use to convert from avi (divx) to mp3 (or other audio formats)? ...

i dont need a video format. just audio.

ps - as of now i am using Mpeg4 direct maker to convert avi to mpg .... then i use hero soft 2001 mp3 maker to convert mpg to mp3 ... so right now i am using 2 softwares for the task which is too tedious

To convert n cut AVI files, you may use VCDCUTTER Xp. You can even extract audio n convert it to MP3.

1) use mp3pro or .rm the least sized ones
but u cannot do to .midi

2)use virtual dub

1. least size would be either .rm or .wma
.rm is smallest .. but requires a useless resource hungry player.

2. this has been mostly a 2 step process for me too ..
avi -> wav ( using virtualdub, freeware )
wav -> mp3 or rm ( using dbpoweramp, freeware )

It can be a one step process .. but I dont know any good freewares for it. Good shareware :
