Software isn't just about functionality anymore, users want brains and beauty. And beauty, as we know, is in the eye of the beholder, which is why the team behind Firefox 3 plans to ditch the unified cross-platform look of the browser in favor of a sexier look tailored to specific operating systems.

Rather than a single look across all platforms, which is the way Firefox currently ships, Firefox 3 will feature different skins for Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OS X and various Linux distributions.

Alex Faaborg, Mozilla’s interface designer, posted a note on his blog yesterday about the divergent themes coming for Firefox 3. Echoing the sentiments of many a Mac Firefox user, Faaborg writes, “personally I think a unified cross platform UI results in applications that at best feel foreign everywhere, and at worst don’t even feel like real applications.”

With both Windows Vista and the upcoming OS X Leopard, there is an increasing focus on sexy visual appeal, and fitting in with the unique visual design each platform has clearly become an integral part of building software. Some might argue that this comes at the expense of new features, but the trend shows no signs of abating.

My Comment :- Nice..I always liked the polished look of Opera. I hope firefox's overall new look will be refreshing for us all. Waiting for the final release.

Offtopic : I am back again... Can't leave this forum. I love this place.

actually its a good idea to install all the three major browsers ( for win  ). I have been a loyal opera user for a long time, but now a days I find FF to be much faster than opera. Yep its coming from my mouth :p, Firefox has much higher browsing speed than other browsers.

BTW Firefox 2.0.0.8 was released yesterday.. anyone posted this?

Today IE, Opera, & Firefox are very similar when it comes to features, Although Opera is better in features by default.

It does makes sense for Mozilla to go for a OS centric theme. Native Looks & feel really rox

I'm posting this from Firefox 3.0 :) Its pretty fast really, but just buggy right now ... I mean, I see some render glitches but then, this is just a preview Gran Paradiso build 3.0a8 :)

Opened 21 tabs, 12 flash videos among them, still browsing among tabs are smooth as water on mirror.

Don't see visual changes as of now, like the ones shown there..

This bookmarking thing rocks for sure but I wish there was a hack to make it submit to some online service too. Though I can have another button for that, it'd be good to use this one and reduce clutter :)

[Ubuntu users can sudo apt-get install firefox-3.0 (4 MB)]

He is using an alpha version not the final version...
Alpha can be downloaded from here :

Or Firefox 3.0 Alpha Minefield (nightly) can be downloaded from here.
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/
.(Its slightly updated from what Qwerty boy is using.)

I am using Firefox 3.0 Alpha Minefield right now....
