Ad hoc require for without wifi access-point setup, for example: you are in some place where you don't have access to any wifi access-point, in that case we can create our own access-point using in-built wifi adapter(at the cost of low strength signals) its fairly ok for some low size files transfers, but connection may break at any moment when it receive too much signal stress due to file transfer in different circumstances. So consider it for a temporary or emergency situation only.
Sharing file or accessing other pc atached under win7 is easy(just make sure your are in a trusted and virus free network). To access other pc use computer name or use its ip address assigned by access point, modem, router, switch ect. And use any one under run command or explorer directly by typing.
Things require:
- pc must have user I'd with password(not blank).
- file sharing must be turned on.
- if using 3rd party firewall then turn it off temporarily(if blocking the access).
- use $ in front of drive letter for easy access in case drive is not on sharing by default.

P.S: WLAN= wireless lan(network) | WLAN = WAN? , I hope you were pointing towards wireless LAN because we are covering that only.-D

What if we use RJ45 connectors to form an 'ad-hoc' network??Will it be more reliable than Wireless LAN??
Even I have the same query. Maybe this month's fasTrack can answer many such questions.

Then it won't be called as ad hoc(wifi only), but a simple LAN.-) it will be your best option for fast file transfer over wired LAN connection. Just assign one ip on both systems manually, no need for default gateway(put anything similar to your ip address, eg:192.168.1.1/10.0.0.1 ect)and DNS address(leave it on auto). Done.

The same query(and many others) is solved in this month's FastTrack.
