enabling the remote desktop sharing on my pc n laptop

guys.... i have been trying to connect my laptop n pc for remote desktop sharing, primarily to put the other pc on stand by or switch off or run any application on the other system. but at the very begining when i try to set up the connection the message which i recieve is "NO TERMINAL SERVERS FOUND".
what is the solution to this prob..... any help.
lappy n pc are connected thru the bsnl type II modem with PC connected by Rj45 lan cable and laptop wirelessly.

VNC server did the job perfectly fine. however for u r info the os on both the platforms is XP sp2.
