I Always Prefer 1080p
Use a tool called Nero Drive Info
Normally its bulit-in with Nero
Check for the Maximum DVD Write Speeds and Formats Supported
DVD +/- R/RW and then post about the end result

The possible cause may be your DMA settings for DVD Writer & HDD is not enabled. If DMA not enabled data transfer rates are very low.
In device manager under 'IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers' catagory, check the properties of your respective [HDD/Optical drive] Controller . The 'Current Transfer Mode' should be something like 'Ultra DMA mode x'. ( "! Transfer Mode Downgraded" message should not be there.)

WinXP enables DMA by default. But it may be possible that the setting is disturbed by any 3rd party drivers.

Mine takes around 4mins at 24x with my sony dru 810A. I think 6 mins for a cd is a bit long. Sorry i don't know the solution though.

One of the things could be highly fragmented HDD. Defragment your HDD. Enable DMA. My PC is also the same configuration and I also have sony DVD writer. It takes about 6 minutes for writing one DVD(moserbaer brand).

@mohanty1942

there r 2 priamary nd secondary ide channels under ide atapi controllers

under one of them in Device 0 the transfer mode was DMA nd the current transfer mode was Ultra DMA Mode 5

in Device 1, i changed it to DMA but the current transfer mode shows PIO mode

@JBP

Your Device 1 is the DVD Writer. The transfer mode=PIO is the colpritt.

If there is a checkbox 'Let BIOS determine transfer mode' tick it. Take a restart.

If the above step doesn't solve the problem (i.e. after restart the transfer mode is still =PIO) then:
You need to attach the DVD drive to the secondary channel. (You will need another IDE cable; 80 Conductor cables are preferaable rather than 40 conductor one.)
If still not solved give your Motherboard & DVD-RW model numbers here.
