Right off the assembly line
I have some problems with my DVD writer. This is HL-GT-ST DVD RAM GSA-H12N. The story egins like this...
I had burnt 9-10 moserb-baer DVDs. But when I started using Sony DVDs it gave me several errors. I couldn't write on any of them. I am(was) using Nero Express OEM, and that gave me a error log which was like this

after that I didn't burn any other DVD though no problem was faced in burning CDs

after a long gap I again used a moser baer DVD and it worked
now the real problem starts
Thereafter I tried my hand in writing other DVDs. The process is successful but th DVD writer refuses to read what it has written. In reading that media, it hangs for sometime but shows nothing. Please help me.

Check the power cable/IDE cable if all is ok then its time to change it, if under warranty then get RMA. I did so last month my sony doing the same problem, it was writing the disk & nero verifying it too but failed to read the disk.

Broken In
This is a typical problem of many if not all DVD Writers: See whether the DVD works on other DVD drives or not: If it does it is alright : If it does not then the Writer is not writing properly

If it is read by other DVD Drives then try to clean the Lens of the Drive using a lens Cleaner Disk or if the Drive is out of warranty and you have some advanced user experience then open the drive yourself and clean it up [There is a article about this in Digit some months ago: Follow it before you attempt anything]

If other drives cannot rad it try to write a High Quality [Verbatim if possible] disc and then see whether it is being played. . .

I can tell you my experience but before reading it please please do not try to imitate it at home:
I too have this trouble since long and i used to collect all this unreadable discs in a Disc Spindle case where due to regulaer movement and all they used to get scrached up a little bit and wonder of wonders when i removed them after sometime to discard them i gave them a last chance by putting one in after the other in the DVD Drive and i was amazed that most of them were perfectably playable:

Right off the assembly line
I didn't check it on other drives. Probably I've lost the Discs. That time I used Sony DVDs and that was the problem. Since then, I am using CDburnerXP as my burning software and Moserbear DVDs as my optical discs. I have not faced this problem till now.

From the log that u posted, it shows that u're using Nero v6.6...

Come on man that's outdated way too long ago! That's y u rn't able to write some DVDs....

As u said that now u're using CDBurnerXP Pro n face no problem, shows that its indeed a prob of outdated SW.

And moreover I'd recommend u personally to use CDBurnerXP Pro. Nero 9 sucks high time. Can u imagine it takes ana verage of 30-45 mins to install on a fairly gud PC!!

I dunno what the Nero ppl were thinkin while makin the installer!!

I still can't burn Sony DVDs. Can anyone suggest an idea to overcome this problem. Although, moserbaer works fine for me, but I want to know what's the reason behind it?

The Burning Curse
I had this same problem with my old Lite On DVD Writer. I could burn and verify stuff but it didn't read the same dvd when put back in the reader. Eventually it stopped burning and reading dvd's or cd's completely.
I would suggest check the data cable and power connector and if everything's working fine then its time to move onto a new writer.

Btw i tried using Ashampoo Burning Studio 8 when this problem started with my writer but it was a waste of time and efforts.

So i just got a new Samsung SH223 Octo Edge(Rs 1.1k) dvd writer recently.

I think it is because Sony dvds are incompatible with your DVD writer. I had the same problem with my Sony DVD writer and Moserbaer DVDs. So I quit using Moserbaer discs.

The Sorcerer

oh wow...Xenforo!!!
There are certain PIO/DMA conflicts which is happening recently due to some reason in windows xp recently- although I am pretty suprised no1 figured it out yet. CD club freaks are filled with such queries. The OP needs to be aware when I say this- sometime it works and sometimes it doesnt. Issues vary from bad writing to extremely long burn time.
Go to your system's bios and switch to DMA mode for your drivers manually- this is for sata. For IDE, its PIO mode. Then boot to windows and go to device manager. All the advance settings devices under ATA/ATAPI devices must be DMA for sata drive and PIO for IDE. Restart and let me know if something happens.
