I use WinXP Pro. I was working on Dos and typed attrib and I got the error that it neither external nor internal command of Dos. I typed Xcopy, net and several other commands and I get the same response. I remember working in dos with those commands in XP envir sometime earlier.
What could be the prob ?

It looks like those commands are missing from your system for whatever reasons.

If you have a boot floppy , then it is likely that the floppy would have them. Just copy those commands to your Windows directory.

I checked the windows\system32 directory and I managed to find all and more of the commands in it , but still I get that error that the command is not recognised as internal or external command whenever I type xcopy or net or attrib etc... Please help me

It doesn't matter if you use "command" or "cmd". Make sure the PATH environment variable is set to C:\Windows\System32 in System Settings>Advanced>Environment Variables>System Variables. Or you can manually set the path in the command prompt by typing in:
set path=C:\Windows\System32
