Hello,

My relative wants to upgrade his old machine. Planning to use some of the components from the old PC and exchange some others (details below). Please suggest.

1. What is the purpose of the computer? (Note: If you are planning to say multimedia, you will have to be more specific as all types of systems are capable of doing that)
A: Gaming and multimedia (mainly photo-editing using photoshop)

2. Are you open to alternate ideas/products giving similar better performance but offering more VFM/ sellers? If not- why?
A: Yes, of course.

3. What is your MAX budget?
A: Rs.25000

4. Planning to overclock?
A: Yes

A: Windows 7 home premium or Windows XP SP3

6. How much hard drive space is needed?
A: 500GB/1TB.

7. What resolution will the screen run at & whats the size of the screen you want? If you already want have one and want to use it, mention its resolution and size.
A: Already have Samsung Syncmaster 17" flat screen CRT, max resolution 1280x1024. Not planning to use 2nd monitor.

8. How would you rate your hardware knowledge from the count of 1-10? (1 being the lowest, 5 being you are somewhat in sync with the current performers and 10 being the highest)
A: 5

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?

A: Will be done by assembler.

10. When are you planning to buy the system?
A: Within 2 weeks

11. Are you one of the types looking out for "future proof" configurations?
A: Yes, at least 2 years.

12. Are there going to be any components that you don't want to include in this new rig? If yes, do mention.
A: Yes, planning to use the following components from the old desktop.

80 GB old HDD.
Sony DVD writer
Antec SLK 3000B cabinet
Monitor (17" Samsung CRT, mentioned previously)
Mouse
Keyboard
Microtek UPS

Planning to exchange:
Processor : AMD Athlon 64 3000+
Motherboad : Asus A8N VM SE
Ram : 2GB DDR 400 RAM
Graphics card : XFX 6800 GS 256MB DDR3

This means the following are needed among others. I have some in mind, please suggest otherwise. I dont know the exact price, though.

Processor - Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H
RAM - Corsair value 2X2GB DDR3 1333Mhz
Graphics card - Radeon HD 5670 1GB DDR5 (which brand)
Power supply - ?

Correct me if I'm wrong, you only need CPU, motherboard, Ram, PSU and graphics card. My suggestion is also go for a 500 GB HDD as 80 GB is too low for today's standard.

I'm suggesting you an Intel Sandy Bridge based rig which is way powerful than any AMD counterpart.

Core i5 2400 @ 9.3K
Intel DH67VR @ 5.3K
Corsair 4 GB 1333 MHz Single stick DDR3 @ 2.1K
Seagate 500 GB @ 1.7K
Corsair GS600 @ 4K
Sapphire HD 5770 @ 7K

Total is coming as 29.4K.

You can reduce the price by going for MSI HD 6670 @ 5.5K and FSP SAGA II 500W PSU @ 2K. Then the total is 25.9K

Hi,

You are correct, I only need CPU, motherboard, RAM, PSU, graphics card and HDD.

It seems 5770>6670>5670. So I think I will go for 5770. It I go for AMD based config, what are my options? Intel based config seems too expensive for my relative.

Thx

Actually, you are right...if you go for an AMD based rig then you can get a well balance between CPu and GPU performance.

Phenom II 955 @ 6.4K
Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H @ 4k
Corsair 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 @ 2.1K
Seagate 500 GB Sata @ 1.7K
FSP SAGA II 500W @ 2K
MSI HD 5770 1 GB @ 7.1K

Total 23.3K. You can also go for Sapphire HD 6850 @ 9.5K. It is a far superior card.

Me and my relative are more or less decided on this configuration. Some questions though:

1) Are you referring to Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition?
2) Confused between 6850 and 5770. From reviews on the net, I see 6850 to be far superior on the benchmarks, but wont it perform on bottleneck with the processor?
3) What about availability and price of Sapphire 6850 in Kolkata?
4) Should I buy 1 4GB stick for RAM or 2x2GB and setup in dual channel?

Sometime in the future we will buy another monitor and work with dual monitor setup.

I am seeing many versions of 6850 in the Sapphire website.

Which one was referred to in post # 4?

Phenom II 955 is a Black edition processor, there is no Non- BE Phenom II 955.

Phenom II X4 955 is a very capable processor and there is no chance of bottleneck. You can go with the high end cards like HD 6950 or GTX 570 with it without bottleneck.

Sapphire HD 6850 is available in Kolkata. Check Vedant Computers and M.D computers. Price is around 9.5 to 10K

Get a single 4 GB stick for now. The performance difference between 2X2 dual channel and single 4 GB is not that much. Sooner 4 GB modules are gonna be the mainstream module and their price will be even cheaper. That time add another 4 GB.

Get the following card

Ok thanks so much for clarifying.

One thing more, I think the card above requires separate power supply connectors. Does the power supply suggested have this?

All the cards above 6670 needs external power. This card needs one PCI Express 6 pin connector and FSP SAGA II is having one.

But IMO the intel rig suggested by Manju will be better than AMD. Its a new gen. Proccy that means less heat and power consumption. And moreover from many reviews it seems that 955BE is having some sort of heating issues.
So, choose wisely.
