can I know which software to use to change dat(video cd) files to real media(rm) format.

DAT is nothing but (MPEG1 video + MPEG1 Layer2 Audio) packed with a header. Use VCD Gear (free) to convert it to MPEG1 file (MPEG1 program stream). This conversion takes no more than a couple of minutes for about 800mb source file

Convert (re-encode) this to RM using Real's Helix Producer. A demo is available.
