Hey guyz, check this.
Firefox seems to be partying on my RAM! Can anyone tell me if this is usual or is it just a unique case (trouble) on my computer.

Seems like the browser conveniently forgets to release the RAM which was alloted to it when higher number of tabs was open!

I don't think Firefox is the problem.

Not Opera. *Please use the app before you blame it.
Opera's probably got the best bundle of features out there and uses the least amount of RAM of the Major 4 browsers.

Time change the firefox version, download firefox 3,its much faster than opera and IE.In my system ff3 uses 80~100mb wen there r 15 tabs.
>bakup ur profile if needed
>uninstall older ff
>delete all the folder named Mozilla frm Document folder
>install the new one
FF3's speed is amazing

Guyz please note that this is Portable Firefox. I hate having to reinstall programs every time I format PC and reinstall OS windows so I use portable apps only. Can it be because of that?

Plus a number of extensions that I use are still not compatible with FFx 3 so upgrade is out of question as of now.

@hitboxx
AFAIK Win XP and Linux handle RAM in different manners so I guess Linux might be able to take care of sh!tty RAM management by FFx which Windows could not:( While I am not sure this might be case, I am just saying that is what I think.

On Open SuSE

with nine tabs open

I think the problem will also be related to WHAT you do in nine tabs - flash, video, java, etc. ??

if u upload/download files thru sites like Megaupload or RS, the whole file will be stored in cache, mostly in ram. Also some flash sites eats up lots of memory.

And if u browse too much in one tab w/o closing it, then all the pics encountered will be cached in ram for faster reloading.

btw most of the times the memory used cant be strictly proportional to number of tabs opened. It depends on the content of each tabs and the active cache the pages are using.

There is a RAM-freeing addon for firefox.
Also, u can configure and make ur own versions of portable firefox.
That way, u can have the latest versions with the best plugins u like.

i agree with all the above answers but in your case it was taking too much of RAM, so i suspect this may be a spyware or virus problem
