A fiend of mine needs a new CPU.

1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')
Ans: Movies , ms Office, web browsing

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans: 15k

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans: no

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans: Windows 7 Home Premium

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans: 250 gb

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans: only the CPU.

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans: kb , mouse , monitor, speakers

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: asap

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans: assembler

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans: lamington road

11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans: My computer guy offered me this :

Intel P4 Dual Core @ 3 GHz CPU
Gigabyte G41 Mother Board
1 X 2 GB DDR3 RAM (Kingston)
1 X 250 GB SATA Hard Disk (Seagate)
1 X I Ball ATX Cabinet
1 X LG DVD Writer

for 14.8k
Now this isn't for me,but for a friend, so it would help if someone explained to her the cons of such a config.

Thanks in advance :)

Don't get that. As far as I know, LGA 775 processors have reach their end of life period and are too outdated now. You can get a much better config for that price. I would suggest the following but it would cost 2.5k more:

Intel Pentium G620 3550
Gigabyte GA-H61M-D2-B3 3000
Corsair 2x2GB DDR3 1333 MHz 1500
250 GB SATA 6.0 GBPS (Seagate or WD) 4000
ASUS SATA DVD-Writer 1135
Corsair CX430 V2 2200
Cooler Master Elite 311 2000

Total 17385

^ G620 is leagues ahead of that P4 your dealer is trying to sell you. And in any case, you can always upgrade to a better processor.

Just replace the psu in the above config with an fsp saga II 400 or corsair cx 430 v2 and you are good to go. :)

cheap generic psu is last option & only recommended for low power systems like G620/athlon II x2 with no graphics card.btw just for the information the configuration i suggested will consume just ~150W.

Gigabyte H61M-D2H is better than Asus P8H61-M LX which has no DVI & HDMI port & also has a lower quality onboard audio(ALC887 vs ALC889 which many consider the best budget onboard audio solution).also gigabyte after sales support too is much better than asus.

if its only basic tasks like playing movies, browsing etc then won't atom dual core processors inside these netbooks be good enough?.
desktop for basic tasks at 15K will have stiff competition from netbooks, budget latops etc
