MP3 itself is a compression  Mp3 is a Codec which compresses RAW wave to low size Audio file with negligible loss of quality.

All you can do is....reduce the Bitrate of MP3 from standard 128kbps to something like 32kbps :)

yes bitrate reduction will reduce the size ... 32kbps will not be advisible better try 64kbps

Yes, you can..but by reducing Bitrate of the MP3 File or converting to MP4 which will have some benefit over MP3

You can use Music Match Juke box for reducing the size of MP3 files by reducing the bit rate, If you want to use them on you mobile phone convert the file into MP3pro format with 56Kbps bitrate.

When there is conversion of music to MP3 format there is one best known converter LAME. Original LAME is a command line software. LAME Xp is GUI version of it. Download it from
*www.free-codecs.com/download/LameXP.htm

BTW Audacity use LAME for MP3 conversion

Phones with MP4 support will probably haf support for .aac. They haf smaller size and better quality than MP3.
Try that. But dun try lossless aac or protected aac. Most phones un support them.

The best combo perhaps would be 64 kbps + VBR. This would give generally around 3~ MB file sizes with decent enough audio for a cheap headphone to play on. 32 kbps can get too low but the quality loss will be very huge and easily detectable even by a non-audiophille.

converting to MP4

No, I don't recommend you to convert MP3s to MP4 as MP4 is a superset of MP3. That means MP4 is a container which has to hold MP3 itself (or AAC)

by reducing Bitrate of the MP3

Again not recommended. Reducing the bitrate defenetly kills your music unless you are not professionaly remastered the audio with Dithering.

If you want to save some size in MP3, better go for VBR instead of CBR.

Try MP3 Pro, 64 kbps VBR.

or... upgrade the memory.. there actually is no point compressing music down to 32 kbps.

I have used diet mp3 and was quite depressed with output. It made them 96 kbps but the audio quality was not bearable. I will have to try that 64+vbr technique
