Cannot boot into windows

Right off the assembly line
guys, whenever i boot thru my HDD, i get an error saying that
DISK BOOT FAILURE, PLEASE INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
but when the cd-rom is set as the first boot device, with the xp pro cd in it, the comp boots properly!!! this never used to happen before.........plz help

Well, this happened once when I messed up my Fedora Core installation and made 2 primary partitions instead. Then, all I remember doing was run a fixmbr and fixboot which apparently didnt work, then I used the recovery console and deleted the new partition and made it free space, now windows booted. After booting I added the freespace to an extended partition via the fdisk options...
