Bare minimum UPS for this rig.

My friend has placed order for the following components to build a rig.

Intel Core i3-2100
ASUS P8H61-M PLUS V2
GIGABYTE GTX 560Ti OC
Corsair DDR3 4 GB
Seagate Barracude 1TB
SeaSonic S12II 620
HP Optical Drive
Dell IN2030

Which is the bare minimum UPS needed to give a backup of 5-10 minutes? Its just to save data and shut down. Suggest the cheapest one as he's on a tight budget.

^1 KVa will at least give 10-20 mins back up, until and unless he's running a benchmark or some really stressful application.

@OP- If you don't face any kind of fluctuation, go for intex otherwise APC, but it will cost almost double.

not online but in markets like nehru place.i am assuming this because intex 600va still costs ~1200 in nehru place(the same as last time i checked 1kva prices).even with some price increase it still should not be more than ~2000.

if there is a powercut when he is gaming, UPS mayn't take such load and shut down. of course, if PC is idle, it'll give 15min backup. but looking at the moment power is disconnected.

my assumption is based on extreme online power calculator which gave me ~400W with 560Ti.with a power factor of 0.6 a 1kva ups will give 600W & total battery capacity should last for at least ~2-3 min at this max power draw.since 400W is 2/3rd of the max power draw therefore i assumed ~5 min backup.

^^ Same problem occurred with my microtek 800Va ups. On idle it would give me around 10-15 min. backup. But, when I play games like Battlefield Bad Company 2, pc would simply restart . After all that issue I bought APC 1.1KVA.

1st of all Intex 1 KVA is not available at 1.8K, it is 2.5K +. 2ndly it can provide backup for almost 30 mins without gaming and more around 15 mins while gaming or running resource hungry apps. But problem with these local companies are that their battery dies too early.

Better get APC 600VA around 2K. It will provide enough time to shut down PC even while gaming. If you can find Numeric then get their 800VA+ or 1 KVA model which are cheaper than APC models.

^My APC 600 never gave more than 10 mins back up even without a GPU.

it all depends on load.even APC at full load gives about ~5min of backup.you can calculate the backup time by using this method:
1.calculate total energy output by multiplying max load(given in specifications different from va rating) & backup time at this max load(~5min for APC lesser for cheaper brands).
2.calculate the load of your system when playing games etc(use online power calculator/reviews etc).
3.divide the total energy output you got in step 1 by load obtained in step 3 to get approx backup time in min.

some points to note:
a)cheaper brands use lesser quality batteries whose capacities decreases over a period of time more rapidly than say a brand like APC.though it will decrease over time.
b)APC clearly states(& numeric too i think) the max power rating(different from VA & is in watts).for cheaper brands like intex multiply VA rating with 0.6(assumed power factor may be higher but just to be on safe side,APC has a power factor of ~0.67) to get max load in watts.

So an 800VA of any of the above brands will do? I'll check the prices and post.

In this why is the price of APC 1.1kVA less then 1kVA?

APC 1.1 KVA cheaper thn APC 1KVA . Take APC 1.1KVA best for u. I used Intex 1KVA n belive me its totally crap . Burnt out within a year . Bcoz of burn warrnty also void. So stay away frm Intex , Iball etc local brand .

APC 1kva is coslier than 1.1kva because it has extra feature of monitoring software through usb port etc.

^^Anyways he won't be needing the monitoring stuff. So it'll be either Numeric 1KVA or APC 1.1KVA. There is no other cheaper option right?

He settled down for Intex 1KVA and changed the PSU to Seasonic S12II 520.

I've got a doubt now. The UPS specs say that its 1000VA/500W. So if he OC's the card & add more optical drive/HDD's and the wattage crosses 500, will the UPS be able to provide backup or will it turn off all of a sudden?

And also how much watts can Seasonic S12II 520 provide? Is it exactly 520 or a bit more?

yes. it'll. ODD & HDD will add 5W for each drive you add. only GPU or processor overclock may make an impact on backup.
