DDR2 Late Because of Latencies?
DDR2 SDRAM adoption is a bit different thing for the industry compared to PCI Express bus. Even though both technologies are standing in the beginning of their course of life, DDR2’s way will be pretty tough because of the following reasons:
* DDR2 SDRAM modules are harder to make, some companies claim.
* DDR2 needs more complex mainboard PCBs.
* Even though DDR2 is reportedly easier to make for fabs, its cost is likely to be higher than that of DDR.
* DDR2 does not bring any advantages over conventional DDR at first.
* DDR2 will only be used by some Intel-based PCs in 2004.
Nevertheless, even if DDR2 has the same cost compared with DDR, it will still not be as fast as DDR because of high latencies that decrease the efficient bandwidth of memory. AMD has put the facts straight by saying that DDR2 would only make sense at 667MHz, a speed-bin that will be available is mass quantities only next year. This year mainboard makers will ramp production of DDR2 at 400MHz and 533MHz, but with their moderate performance there is likely to be rather limited demand for this kind of memory, especially when a lot of memory companies offer DDR solutions at speeds of up to 550MHz right now with 600MHz DDR SDRAM products just around the corner.
and so on and so forth ...is DDR2 worth the hype?
DDr2 sarts where DDR stops. It will debut at 533 and very soon ramp upto 800. Unfortunately it is not backward compatible with DDR chips. The pin structue is also different. The bus width will be 64 as now, but since like DDR it supports Dual Channel ... the bandwidth will be doubled.
The good part abt DDR2 is that it consumes less power than DDR memory.
DDR2 uses 1.8V while DDR uses 2.5V.
