what data are u talkin abt ?
what do u wanna protect ? from what ? virii ? trojans? attacks ? industrial espionage ?
give us details dude

if ur talkin abt general internet then get urself a good AV and firewall
there are plenty of threads to help u decide
if its email then use PGP system (pretty good privacy) to get urself a set of public and private keys for encrypted excahnge of msgs/data via email
