Have a look at logitech z313. Its available at 1.1k and are lot better than altec lansing bxr1221.
I have the set and i purchased it after listening to both the altec and logitech.
Though the bass is a bit weak but it still stronger than bxr1221.
At 1.6k, you can get an altec lansing vs2621 which is better than both the above.
