My friend wants a new PC, he won't be needing monitors, and other I/O devices. He asks for a gaming PC, but I know 20k buys just a piece of such a PC.
1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')
Ans: Movies, Games (expect to at least run most games, even if not very smoothly).
2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans: 20k, extensible to 22k.
3. Planning to overclock?
Ans: Not planning but won't mind doing it if doesn't affect the temperatures much.
4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans: Windows 7
5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans: 500 GB
6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans: He plans to reuse his old monitor, I'm not sure but it probably is a CRT (1024x768).
7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans: Keyboard, Mouse, Speakers, Optical Drive.
8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: Tomorrow (23 Dec). Yes, hard on such a short notice, that's why I'm here. I'd try convincing him to delay it, but for now let's consider we'll start buying parts tomorrow.
9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans: Assembler, but I'd try getting most parts on my own.
10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans: Jaipur. I've often found better prices online, so I'm open to online purchase (from trusted stores).
11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans: I have a Desktop PC with i5 2320, runs most games, my friend wants a third generation, I'm not update with prices and graphics performance but I got my CPU with 1 TB HDD and DVD Writer under 21k, so I suppose he too would be able to get a 3rd gen i5. He also wants a graphics card (which I'm sure is not possible in this budget), so for a 3rd gen i5 how is the graphics performance compared to an entry level graphics card ? Is it enough to convince him to drop the idea of a graphics card ?
