2.5" vs 3.5" external HDD

As I've replaced my internal 750gb 5400rm HDD with a 120gb SSD (Corsair Force GT), I'll now be needing a fast enough external HDD for movies/games playback and storage. Have shortlisted these two (one being 2.5", while the other one being a 3.5" drive):

WD My Passport USB 3.0 1 TB External Hard Disk | External Hard Drive | Flipkart.com

So just wanted to confirm that which one of these would be more reliable for constant playback...

Essential requires external power!!!. better go for some that does not require external power. :)

You don't require portability so even 3.5 inch one would be OK also it will be much cheaper. It will have higher speed (7200 rpm) as compared to 2.5 inch (5400 rpm).
The only problem is of external power.

Forgot to mention, it's a laptop (Vaio S15). So, perhaps the 'portability' will be a deciding factor. Will I face any problems playing games from the 2.5" external HDDs?

Also, are there any performance differences b/w 'My Passport' and 'My Passport Essential'?
