You will not be able to install Windows XP over Vista. Vista is a latest version and Windows operating system does not allow lower versions to install on lastest version. Hence you need to format your hard drive and install XP. After that you can install Vista if you want.

When you try to write a DVD from files it converts the files to .vob which is a DVD format. Hence first the converting takes place and then writing. As you know converting always takes time. Try burning a data dvd and check.
