But isn't that still using the wordpress.com thing all over again? Isn't there any way to backup a wordpress.com database and move it over to one's own domain?

you have to edit wordpress setup to enable domain mapping to your new brought domain name. for that ,wordpress asks around Rs450(as per their site) .

You need managed DNS service for this.so ,ask for that from your domain hosting provider. now ,,login to your site's cpanel and go to managed DNS option ,choose edit CNAME .then add your wordpress blog address. make sure the host should be mentioned. for eg www.foobar.com means "www" is the host(which can be any). and then enter the URL provided by wordpress for the identification of your blog.

Best of Luck! even I configured my site today only! :D .and ....I chose blogger .it is fast. few other free blog hosting options with free domain mapping exists apart from blogger.com too. google for that :D

I also want to know how to do this. If I purchase only a domain, then how can I get a cpanel ? all i get is to configure domain name server. . . . . I checked blogger help, they also saying the same DNS setting. CName etc

As per my li'l knowlege, i will get access to cpanel when i have my own hosting ....
