Right off the assembly line
I recently installed Windows Server 2003 in dual boot configuration with existing Windows XP SP2 on my Compaq Presario v3229AU laptop. The problem is that Windows Server does not detect my on-board Conexant sound card and hence it is not playing any sound. I tried all drivers available from Compaq website (both XP and Vista drivers as they don't provide Server drivers). When i try to install XP driver, it gives me an error that "Media for this driver not found", however when I try to install Vista driver, it passes the 1st step where it shows my audio device, but in the end still fails to install driver. And if I try to forcefully replace the "Legacy Audio Drivers" from Device Manager, it gives error "Failed to start the device (Code:10)". There is also no conflict in Device Manager. I also checked Group Policy Editor and enabled the Sound service. In short, I've tried everything but have failed to enable sound. I know for a fact that problem lies in the OS and not the hardware as sound is still working perfectly in Windows XP. Can anyone please help me?

the directx files tab didn't show any error, however in sounds tab following error was reported:

"No sound card was found. If one is expected, you should install a sound driver provided by the hardware manufacturer."

tell me one thing...are you using Win2003 enterprise edition?? then it is disabled BY DEFAULT.

follow these steps:
1. start > run > services.msc
2. found 'windows audio' service
3. right click on it > properties > set the 'startup type' to 'automatic'
4. click 'start' button > ok
5. your lappys sound is up!! :D

oops!! i overlooked it!! :D

oks...lets start afresh....plzzz uninstall the sound driver/s....then install the sound driver(xp version) from manufacturer cd(which compaq guyz gave you...otherwise dwnld compatible driver)....use Device Manager to verify that your sound device has a driver installed(expand Sound, video and game controllers, and then verify that your sound device is listed)....now try this once again....start > run > dxdiag....go to the directx tab, display tab(here make sure the 3 DirectX features are Enabled)...then music tab....any error???....also chk from control panel the status of the audio device....at last also ensure that sound service is started:rolleyes: by these steps....
1. start > run > services.msc
2. found 'windows audio' service
3. right click on it > properties > set the 'startup type' to 'automatic'
4. click 'start' button > ok

reboot your lappy....chk what it says.....:(
