AMD - Aaja Meri Darling
1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run?

ERDAS, ArcInfo, Oracle, Adobe suite (PS, LR, Premier pro)
Not much of a gamer really.
The PC will remain on for days together after image processing batches are queued up.

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Budget is max 35k for CPU+MOBO+RAM+SMPS
slightly adjustable

3. Planning to overclock?
Do not want to overclock hence settling for top of the line CPU offering from AMD.

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Windows 7 64bit (Pro or Ulti)

5. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?

I plan to buy the following components only
CPU
MOBO
RAM
SMPS

I already have :

Storage
128GB Samsung 830 series SSD
1 x 1TB WD Caviar blue
2 x 1.5TB WD Caviar black
1 x 2TB WD Cavier green

GPU
Gigabyte HD 7700 1GB

Cabinet:
NZXT Lexa S

Monitor:
Viewsonic 22" LED monitor

6. When are you planning to buy the system?
Immediately, this coming week

7. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
I live in Ahmedabad, so most likely going to order from flipkart, theitwares, primeabgb as I have good previous experience with these online retailers.

=======================
Config that I have in mind is

CPU :
AMD FX 8350
price : 12100/- theitwares, 12560/- flipkart

MOBO :
GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD5 AM3+
price :14,000/- theitwares

currently the best board I could find online. Is there an UD7 board which can handle this CPU ? I am kinda inclined to try a gigabyte board this time.
p.s : I do not want an ASUS based board as I had very small but annoying issues with my present board (M4A785TD-V-EVO)

RAM :
utterly confused between the following choices, all are from flipkart.
I will need at least 8GB of RAM due to multitasking, more the better.

Corsair Vengeance DDR3 8 GB (1 x 8 GB) PC RAM (CMZ8GX3M1A1600C10) 3192/-

DDR3 1600/PC3 12800
10-10-10-27 CAS Latency

G.Skill RipjawsX DDR3 8 GB (1 x 8 GB) PC RAM (F3-12800CL10S-8GBXL) price : 3226/-

DDR3-1600/PC3-12800
10-10-10-30-2N CAS Latency

G.Skill RipjawsX DDR3 8 GB (1 x 8 GB) PC RAM (F3-14900CL10S-8GBXL) price :4946/-

DDR3-1866/PC3-14900
10-11-10-30-2N CAS Latency

is the price difference between 1866 vs 1600 RAMs worth it ?

SMPS :
My present SMPS is Coolermaster Real Power pro 460W (80+ bronze cert.) however I don't think it will be enough for the new system.
I've zeroed in on the following SMPS, there doesn't seem something more VFM and efficient at the same price point.
Also has 9 Sata power cables which I dont see on any other SMPS in this price range.

Seasonic S12II 620 Watts PSU , price 5465/- flipkart

Kindly pool in your suggestions :)

Fx8350 has higher number of cores so it may appear to be faster, but in applications such as photoshop, after effects and other media creation/editing, intel is faster.

harshilsharma63, what do you mean by Intel is faster? Obviously if you are talking about 20K Intel i7 3770K then ya, it is faster but when you're talking about i5 3470, I don't think it is faster. in Adobe Premier, FX-8350 is jusy below i7 3770K beating all the i5 processors and it is only slower in OpenCL accelerated tests where Intel can use its HD 4000 Graphics to accelerate the process.
Also most of the database applications, especially Oracle is highly multi-threaded in nature and FX-8350 does have a good amount of advantage.

regarding other software, harshilsharma63, I think you never heard of 'em and so never consider their performance in a Multi-Core CPU. ERDAS IMAGINE is a remote sensing application with raster graphics editor abilities designed by ERDAS for geospatial applications. ERDAS IMAGINE is aimed primarily at geospatial raster data processing and allows the user to prepare, display and enhance digital images for mapping use in geographic information system (GIS) or in computer-aided design (CADD) software. This software is based on multiple sub modules for performing different tasks and they are highly Multi-threaded in nature. The current version released in 2011, version 11.0.4, is specially designed to use Multi-Core CPU to boost performance. So FX-8350 is the default choice here.

The Current version of ArcInfo which is also knwon as ArcGIS and can be used along side with ERDAS plugin, is also multi-threaded.

here is my suggestion:-

AMD FX-8350 @ 12K (Local prices might be more cheaper. For Online, check Smcinternational.in)
Asus M5A970 Evo R.0 @ 6.9K
Kingston HyperX Blue 1600 MHz CL9 8 GB X 1 @ 3.3K
Corsair CX 500 V3 @ 3.3K
Sapphire HD 7750 1 GB GDDR5 @ 7K

Total: 32.5K

Hmmm I'f I were into gaming even a little bit the i5 would be my hands down choice. However I'd disagree that intels have an advantage when it comes to photoshop and video editing / rendering (esp the latter).
Even though i5 3570 is better than AMD's 8350 in power consumption under load, that is not my deciding factor.

Hey Cilus, thanks for the detailed reply. Image processing software definitely like multithreading more rather than performance per core (where intel > amd as of now).
However, I dont need a GPU as I already have the Gigabyte HD 7770. I'd want to invest that money in a better board + smps,

Can you suggest a board which has dual Pci-e x16 channels ? Currently I only find the GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD5 with proper 2 x16 channels.
I might pick up another 7770 in the coming months, just in case I decide to go for multiple displays.

Regarding the smps, since the AMD 8350 consumes double the power of an i5 3570 under full load (which is a drawback nonetheless), better to invest in a 620W SMPS, and the Seasonic S12II 620 Watts seems to be the most efficient and bang for buck at its price.

I will be ordering online only. Local shops in Ahmedabad mostly dont stock AMD as no one seems to buy them here, and even in intel core i5 3570 is unheard of.

The processor is finalised : AMD FX 8350 : 12100 (theitwares)

Motherboard is still not finalised, the only candidate I can find is : GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD5 : 14,000 (theitwares)

RAM ( I probably will go for a 16GB setup as of now instead of looking to match RAM modules later on) :

Kingston HyperX DDR3 8 GB (1 x 8 GB) PC RAM (KHX1600C10D3B1/8G) [PRICE : 3528 x 2 = 7056]

Thank you all for the inputs once again. Its hard to keep up with the constantly changing scenario in terms of building a rig.

Urghh I am not able to edit my post for some goof up on the edit post part. Shows up as a blank post with no text or anything. Hence double posting =_=So total expense AMD 8350 : 12100/-Gigabyte 990FXA-UD5 : 14000/-RAM :16GB ( 8x2GB) : 7500/- (max)SMPS : Seasonic : 5460 /-total : 39-40k approx, which I am fine with.

Well, get the Asus M5A990FX R2.0 @ 10K. This Motherboard is available with Deltapage.com, check their one page price list. And one thing, all the 990FX chipset based AMD motherboards come with two PCI-E X16 2.0 slots running at X16 speed each.

For PSU, Seasonic S12II 620 is a really great buy. But check the prices of it in Theitwares.com too.

@ Xeno

If you have 14k budget for motherboard, then close your eyes and get Asus 990FX sabertooth. This is like a default choice for that budget and also the best one. Period
