It depends upon different factors
1. Type of CPU you are using
2. Latency of the Ram

Normally if you are having a DDR2 ram with core clock speed is equal to the speed of the Databus, it will have more latency than that of a DDR ram, although in a cycle it will transfer twice the data of a DDR ram.
Now AMD processors are more dependent on latency (less latency implies better performance) than the speed of the ram. This is because of the fact they have their memory controller inside the CPU die, rather than in the North Bridge of the M/B. Now CPU can address the memory controller in practically no times. So even if a DDR ram with less latecy can perform better than than a high latency DDRII ram. If both the types are having same latency, then DDR2 will perform better.

On theother hand, all the Intel Processors, except the Core i7 and i5 series, don't have on-die memory controller. So, it takes time to send request to the memory controller present in the North Bridge of the M/B. So they suffers from a bottle neck (CPU needs to send lot of fetching/Writing instruction to the memory controller, but the FSB is not fast enough to send all the inf in no times). The sollution for it to send as much data at a single cycle as you can. For this high speed memory is required, rather than low latency memory. So Intel processors are more dependent of the Ram speed rather than ram latency. Remmber the time, when Intel was forcing the market to shift to DDR2 from DDR memory, to gain advantage over AMD K9 processors.

Core i7 and Core i5 cases are different. They have On-die memory controller and their memor bus is very fast. I am not discussing about them because they only support DDR3 ram.

No My friend, Conroe is the 2nd gen of Core2Duo processors like E6600, 6700 and X6800.
They don't have on-die memory controller. You can check in sites like Guru3d and Anandtech.
