Recently, I came to know about this laptop:

Acer Aspire 5738.

config:

Core2duo T6400
3gig ddr3 ram
320gig hdd
2.7kg weight
GMA 4500MHD Graphics Chipset with up to 1695-MB of shared video memory

Surprised when I found that it has:

1) HDMI port
2) Multitouch trackpad
3) draft-N wifi
4) Vista Home Premium
5) 15.6-inch TFT LED backlit Wide display.

With all this, the price is less than 40k.

and if you want dedicated graphics, check 5738G which comes with "NVIDIA® GeForce® G105M with 512 MB of dedicated DDR2 VRAM supporting NVIDIA® CUDA"

My concern is installing linux. I also want to run VMWare.
I had been told by one of the retailers that it could create probs to install Linux on DELL machines. Is it true?

no problem with linux on dell machines.
Acer 5738 is very good model. has DDR3 RAM max to 4GB. All Acer models come with DDR3 RAM

VMWare -- T6400 does not support hardware virtualization. But running vmware wont be a problem. Except have dobut of installing 64-bit OS, I m still not able to do that on my machines always get error virtualization not enabled or some kind of it.
in Acer 5738G is not that good. better is 5739G, I say interms of gfx as HD3470 is much better.
But if you spend any single penny more than 40K then go with Dell Studio, no second thoughts. Running linux is not a problem infact they also provide Ubuntu many of their configs, in inspiron lineup

Also P8600 proccessor supports hardware virtualization. Not many sub 50K laptops with this proccy in the market.
current prices in bangalore as in papers is 31.5-32K for 5738. We see acer laptops add everyday. I have pricing of HP laptops too.

the last one's specs look promising but then you are entering the zone of XPS and dv5 series.

not dv5 but dv4 and dv6.
also dv6 is much better than dv4 on paper and quality.
also is nothing like XPS, dell studio's config in that price will beat it hands down, except it wont have blu ray drive.
also I missed putting the model for the acer. it is Acer Aspire 5739G.
