I want to buy a new laptop next month and my budget is around 40000 rupees. I will use this laptop for college work (making assignments etc) but i am also an avid gamer so i want a dedicated graphics solution so i can play games like COD 5 and others which came out this year. So which laptop do you think is best for me? here are the specs i need

15 inch screen
2 GB RAM or more
160 GB Hard disk or more
No vista if possible ( DOS or Linux preloaded )
Dedicated graphics from Nvidia

i took a look at Inspiron 1525, its great but doesnt have a good graphics solution. how about the Dell studio series? ( they dont have nvidia ) .. Hp is overpriced i guess. does compaq have any good laptops?

There is no laptop for less than Rs. 40,000 that has a dedicated graphics card. Even if you do find one, it will probably be a really low end card like the Geforce 9200M which can't play COD5 anyways.
You've already seen that the Inspiron doesn't have a graphics card. The Studio only has a Radeon 3450 which isn't that good for gaming either and would be well out of your budget.

Either forget about gaming or increase your budget.

Check out Acer aspire 4930 should be around your price with 9200 / 9300 (dont remember). IMO thats the best gaming lappy dear to your budget. My friend brought inspiron 1520 some time back(July 08) with dedicated 256MB 8600GT for 44K, but thats phased out by dell in India for sale of the XPS 1530 laptops... if you can get it from some retailer.. thats the best u can get.
Studios are out of ur budget man... forget abt them. They have better graphics than 9200/9300. Studio 17 has 256 MB more 3650, which is quite good IMO.

zenith has a crazy website
*www.zenith-india.com/LaptopProducts.aspx?cat=3

it should be on "what were they thinking" in next month's digit.("zenith recommends windows vista home" and the layout in website is of windows xp lol)..
i dont think i will buy a laptop from them.

and why do i have to pay so much premium to get some mobility , i can configure twice as fast desktop at half the price of a laptop. if i wont be able to play games then why should i pay 40000 or so rupees for dell 1525. 40000 for taking notes in class and browsing our shitty college wifi that doesnt work half the time? why do these laptops have such a high price anyways when 1 GB and xp will do all the stuff that a average (non/casual gamer) has to do?

I am thinking about getting a netbook instead, because if i cant play games after paying 40000 then i dont have to waste my money on a dabba. But some idiots have decided to sell their soul to microsoft and sell their "netbook" at rupees 30000 with xp installed..

grrr.

That graphics should handle COD5 fine at least at low-med settings and resolution.

Whoa, that price is really good! But Zenith may not be the best. Even then I think its worth the compromise on the brand-name.

Thats the premium one has to pay for Mobility. :) You should be clear with what you want. A 40,000 lappy will handle games fine. Depends on the games and settings you intend to play them on; Zenith Lappy shown is pretty good for the price.
If you want a better branding, you need to pay a higher price.

i spent 10 minutes on google to find more information about zenith and everybody says its pathetic. There are also very few reviews online for their laptops and very few buyers. Their support seems to be third class and all the people on mouthshut are advising not to buy zenith in their reviews.

anyways

what are the options from compaq / hp ? i think i will go for dell inspiron 1525(around 35k-40k) or a netbook(around 25k)

The Director Plus ultra aint that bad...i met a guy on the net who has bought this and he IS quite satisfied with it!:D It runs all the latest games at decent settings...Geforce 9600M GS with 512 mb aint that bad ! And now Zenith has also increased the price to 44k(final) coz they have added a powerful P8400 2.267 ghz ,3 mb cache, 1066Mhz FSB processor!
