Welcome to Digit’s “e” DVD. Instead of limiting ourselves to physical media, we’re attempting to curate the best content from the WWW for you, and give it to you in monthly instalments. By the 15th of every month there will be a new e-DVD made available to buyers / subscribers of the Digit Magazine, so watch our homepage for updates.

While most of the following is content for your PCs, if you’re reading this from a mobile, scroll to the Mobile section to get some interesting downloads, apps and games, all recommended by Team Digit.

Featured Distros

  • Linux Lite : Linux Lite is a ‘gateway operating system’. Your first simple, fast and free stop in the world of Linux. The focus of the OS is on making the transition from Windows to Linux easy. Linux Lite is a free operating system based on the Ubuntu LTS (Long term Support) series of releases.
Linux Distros
  • Linux Mint: Linux Mint is straight up the most recommended and easy to use distros around at the moment. It is based on Ubuntu but ships with a bunch of extras including codecs and drivers, which makes it quicker to start using the distro.
  • Gentoo: Gentoo is used by a bunch of enthusiasts known as Gentoomen. The updates are regular, and the distro is optimised for your particular system, which is great. It is a bit of a toughie to get into though.
  • Slackware: Slackware is a distro for those who want to dive into the deep end of the Linux pool, and is one of the most basic and customisable distros around. The setup is incredibly fun or painful depending on how you look at it. It is easy to mess up your system if you are using Slackware, so proceed with caution.
  • Kali Linux: Kali Linux is the distro for those who want to try out hacking tools, or get into penetration testing in a more serious manner.
  • Ubuntu: Ubuntu is one of the easiest to use and well known distros around. Ideal for use in offices as well.
  • OpenSuse: OpenSuse is a distro geared towards software developers and system admins. It is one of the most used distros around the world, and is continuously updated.
  • Fedora: Fedora is the distro used by the creator of Linux, Linus Trovalds. This is a distro with plenty of support, and regular updates. It is associated with the RedHat distro.
  • ArchLinux: The ArchLinux distro is a simple and minimalist Linux distro. The updates are frequent. The distro is for more expert users.
  • Solus: Solus is a no nonsense distro designed for home computing. You can access most applications out of the box.
  • SteamOS: Based on Debian, SteamOS is a distro specifically made for gaming on Linux systems. It can be used as a general purpose distro as well. Check the hardware requirements though, they are on the higher side.

System info

  • Thilmera : Thilmera 7 is a system monitor for Windows that compactly displays the performance and status of a PC in real time.
  • FanControl : A highly customizable fan controlling software for Windows.
  • WinObj v3.02 : WinObj is a must-have tool if you are a system administrator concerned about security, a developer tracking down object-related problems, or just curious about the Object Manager namespace.
  • MiTeC Task Manager DeLuxe : Task Manager DeLuxe (TMX) is based on MiTeC System Information Component Suite and offers powerful features available in standard Windows Task Manager in lightweight portable package with many more enhancements. It needs no installation and leaves no traces in system so it can be easily used as portable application everywhere.
  • FullEventLogView : FullEventLogView is a simple tool for Windows 10/8/7/Vista that displays in a table the details of all events from the event logs of Windows, including the event description. It allows you to view the events of your local computer, events of a remote computer on your network, and events stored in .evtx files. It also allows you to export the events list to text/csv/tab-delimited/html/xml file from the GUI and from command-line.
  • Matric : Matric provides keyboaord emulation, macros, stream deck, virtual joysticks, touchpad, and audio player in one handy interface.
  • Desktop Info : This little application displays real time system information on your desktop. Perfect for quick identification, walk-by monitoring and simple remote monitoring of production servers, test farms or any computer you’re responsible for. Uses little memory and low cpu. Everything is customisable including language.
  • SysGauge : SysGauge is a system and performance monitoring utility allowing one to monitor the CPU usage, memory usage, network transfer rate, operating system performance, the status and resource usage of running processes, file system performance, USB performance, disk space usage, disk read activity, disk write activity, disk read transfer rate, disk write transfer rate, disk read IOPS and disk write IOPS for individual logical disks or all physical disks installed in the computer.
  • SystemInfo : SystemInfo is a component used by benchmarks by UL (3dMark, PCMark) in many of to identify the hardware in your system. It does not collect any personally identifiable information. SystemInfo updates do not affect benchmark scores but you may need the latest version in order to obtain a valid score.
  • QuickDiag : A quick and dirty diagnostic tool.
  • QuickMon : QuickMon is a simple monitoring and alerting tool. It allows you to monitor and alert on various resources/services locally or remotely.
  • CPU temp : A simple program that displays your CPU’s temperature in the corner.
  • Rainmeter : Rainmeter allows you to display customizable skins on your desktop, from hardware usage meters to fully functional audio visualizers.
Photo tools
  • QuickImageComment : QuickImageComment displays EXIF, IPTC, and XMP properties of digital images (e.g., JPEG and TIFF as well as some RAW formats) and allows to edit them. Especially editing of user comment and artist (author) is supported by using the last entered or predefined values. These attributes are read from the EXIF, IPTC, and XMP properties of the image and are stored there. Metadata (XMP) in video files are displayed.
  • WPanorama : With WPanorama you can display panoramic pictures by letting them scroll horizontally or vertically on the screen. You can use this software to view the gorgeous 360° swiss panorama included with the program, the 4’689 panoramas available on this site or your own pictures in .jpg or .bmp format.
  • Filmulator : A simple raw photo editor based on the process of developing film
  • Metalith : Metalith is an easy-to-use yet powerful metadata editor.
  • ExifTool : ExifTool is a platform-independent Perl library plus a command-line application for reading, writing and editing meta information in a wide variety of files. ExifTool supports many different metadata formats including EXIF, GPS, IPTC, XMP, JFIF, GeoTIFF, ICC Profile, Photoshop IRB, FlashPix, AFCP and ID3, Lyrics3, as well as the maker notes of many digital cameras by Canon, Casio, DJI, FLIR, FujiFilm, GE, GoPro, HP, JVC/Victor, Kodak, Leaf, Minolta/Konica-Minolta, Motorola, Nikon, Nintendo, Olympus/Epson, Panasonic/Leica, Pentax/Asahi, Phase One, Reconyx, Ricoh, Samsung, Sanyo, Sigma/Foveon and Sony.
  • PerspectiveImageCorrection : Used to rectify the perspective in natural taken images.
  • photo combine : Photo combine renames photos from multiple cameras to avoid filename conflicts and sort by date and time taken across cameras.

  • XnView MP : XnView MP is a versatile and powerful photo viewer, image management, image resizer. XnView is one of the most stable, easy-to-use, and comprehensive photo editors. All common picture and graphics formats are supported (JPEG, TIFF, PNG, GIF, WEBP, PSD, JPEG2000, OpenEXR, camera RAW, HEIC, PDF, DNG, CR2).

  • Ultrakill : ULTRAKILL is a fast-paced ultraviolent old school FPS that fuses together classic shooters like Quake, modern shooters like Doom (2016) and character action games like Devil May Cry.
  • Final Shot : Final Shot is a perma-death fps in which the only way to reload is to rewind time.

Evergreen Games
  • Warframe : Warframe is the free to play model done right, with regular updates, a monetisation model that is fair to players. This is an incredibly complex game with a lot of things to do, and is a major time sink. Essentially you play as space ninjas who are on various missions through the solar system. This is science fiction like you have never seen it before, in any medium.
  • Path of Exile : This is another game that has been around for years, is free to play, and is constantly updated. The game has one of the most expansive skill trees in any game ever. You have to pick classes and clear dunjons. The hardcore mode has permadeath. This is RPG done right.
  • Shotgun Fun Fun : This is a fast paced platformer where you have to navigate around a map and take down as many zombies as possible, before you inevitably meet your death. Crazy, and addivtive.
  • Trackmania Nations Forever : The free version of the game has a stadium environment with thousands of user made tracks. Insane speeds, lots of room for stunts, and split second reactions are all necessary for you to win. This is one of the most popular racing games ever.
  • Altitude : Altitude is an over the top multiplayer game where you have to take a bunch of planes and eliminate enemies. The rounds are frenetic and short. The best thing is the football mode.
  • TeeWorlds : This is a crazy 2D multiplayer platformer. In the solo mode, you have to kill anything else that moves with an arsenal of weapons, or team up and play the deathmatch mode. Moving around requires constant use of a grappling hook, which is the entire charm of this game.

Movie
  • Cops : “Cops” is a short comedy, starring Buster Keaton and featuring Joe Roberts, a star of Silent Hall of Fame.
  • Inner Sanctum : Inner Sanctum is a 1948 American film noir directed by Lew Landers based on the Simon & Schuster book series of the same name and the Inner Sanctum Mystery radio series.

  • Microsoft Whiteboard : Microsoft Whiteboard is a free app that’s available for both app that’s available for both iOS and Android, and basi cally functions like the name suggests, as a whiteboard. The current situation being as it is, work from home and school from home has become the norm. Being able to bring the trusty whiteboard into our homes is one step towards achieving some sort of nor malcy in our lives.
  • News in Bullets : News in Bullets is a news aggregator app that chops up online articles from various sources and turns them into daily news updates in short bullets.
  • Better Portraits : Better Portraits is a blur photo editor which can be used to give your picture background a DSLRlike blurry effect. It also has a couple of extra tools, helping you get the desired effect.
  • Untrack : Untrack is an app that opens links in your preferred browser after removing all known tracking parameters. It does this by modifying every URL you open.
