XP doesn't boot with new hard disk

Hello!

I bought a new 500GB hard disk for my desktop, to upgrade its storage which was originally just 160GB. The thing is, I have an external hard disk (again 500GB) which I keep connected always.

On connecting the new hard disk, the computer refuses to go past the 'Windows' logon screen, i.e. even before clicking on the user and logging in. I checked the BIOS, and the hard disk is reflected there. Also, there is no connection problem, of which I am sure.

But, the computer boots normally if I disconnect the external hard disk.

Am out of reasons why this would happen.

Motherboard: Intel 915
CPU: Intel Pentium 4
Operating System: Windows XP.

P.S.: I know the configuration is old.

Waiting for help...

Thanks.
Setu Shah.

I just installed service pack 3 before around 4 hours...
I guess I will try reconnecting that tomorrow during the day... Thanks!

Tried connecting the drive after installing XP SP3. Worked this time around!

Thanks for your help! Still wondering what the real problem was... Because connections were fine and was even BIOS reflected the drive earlier.

Anyway,

Enjoy:-D!
Take care:wink:
