I'm sure this subject might have come up before, but i m new here and this problem is quite frustating.
I recently got my xp connected with a bsnl 256 mbps (supposedly) internet connection. Against the advice of my engineer, who said i should use win98 , and not XP for browsing, i went ahead and browsed on XP.:)
Now , i switched off the "automatic updates" in my options, but even then XP has this bad habit of chatting with msn online, and it updates , whether you like it or not. (I had Service pack 2 installed . )
Then it restarts and BOOM, XP boots, then goes off , boots- off, boots-off.
If anyone knows the solution to this, PLEASE reply.
Fact is XP Does make for better browsing option than 98. Talk of the proverbial apple! :)

Also:
after XP auto-updates , and it asks for a restart, the following things happen:
1) going into safe mode doensnt work, the same reboot-loop keeps repeating.
2) system restore seems like a good idea at this point, but one cant activate system restore from dos mode.
Reformatting XP is the only way , and i already did this 3 times.

I donot know the exact reason for your problem..

One thing i would be able tell you clearly is that browsing in xp is not the reason for your problem..

I myself use xp with sp2 for browsing.. And many here do...

I think your engineer doesnot know anything...

Try to reinstall ur XP and then install SP2 and all updates using Auto Patcher available in DIGID DVD. (before connecting to net)

And about MSN, u can disable it man using gpedit.msc or many s/w available on net.

PS: ur system eng. suggected u to use win 98 instead of Xp just bcauz they all know that there r so many virus infections for XP not for 98. But the main thing is that if u hv SP2 installed as well as all the updates then it works perfectly.

try to replace hall.dll file wich is in $:\windows\system32\ .$=Drive whr XP is installed. U will find one zip file named drivers.zip somewhr in windows directory. extract the hall.dll dile from it and replace it with old hall.dll. it might solve your problem.
