no, u have to boot with Vista DVD to repair the Vista Boot loaders... and its pretty simple and automated... !!

Can it be easily done?

Nothing is simple... may be a thing is simple for simple for u, but it can be very though for me !!!

but I think once when u install Ubuntu, Vista Boot loader will be deleted, and u may have to repair it !!! and possible may be while repairing the Vista Boot loader u may not be able to boot using GRUB !!!

anyway, Question should be in Open Source section... !!!

P.S.
after u repair Vista, u may lose Ubuntu GRUB loader Refer here, to repair Ubuntu, GRUB loader *ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=224351

Thanks Cheeta,
my question was about the problems with formatting XP. So, i guess this should be in QnA rather than Open Source.

so in case i plan to have only vista, then after formatting XP, i just have to use the vista DVD and repair the bootloader... right?

ya . sort of . . after u format xp , u need not do the vista repair . vista controls the multiboot , so u format xp , u just loose xp , vista will be fine . xp will still be in the boot menu , but if u choose it , some error comes or ur system restarts . but vista will be in the boot menu and will be fine .

the prob is abt linux , u remove xp and install linux then chances are that u might loose vista . u have to use the vista boot dvd and repair vista boot loader. BUT , during this , chato cheeta is suggesting that after u repair vista boot loader , ur linux may not be detected by vista boot loader .and hence GRUB , it might detect vista or vice versa . if u got good luck , it'll be vice versa .

so its damn simple if u just want to remove xp , but not that simple if u want linux . ( it may be if grub or vista boot loader recognizes the other os ).

Nope... Vista do controls the Boot loader but that Boot loader will be in C drive !!! as u format Windows XP u will lose the C drive along with that Boot loader therefore u will neeed to repair the Vista boot loader !!!

Hi, here they have an excellent tutorial,
*apcmag.com/5046/how_to_dual_boot_vista_with_linux_vista_installed_first

so, i dont think the second issue is a problem. Thanks a lot anyways. I hope i can fix vista after formatting XP.

Thanks again,
legolas.

I got it along with my laptop, now why wud it say "pirated version"???

May be version problem, as u may be allowed to install Home Basic or such and u may have used any othert key to install any other version ??

check if that's not the reason...

and funny Nick name :p LOLO = Pirated Version :lol

yes possible . 2 options left : , download pirated version and correct it. or reinstall vista as well .

@legolas , now ur link clearly shows how to do vista & ubuntu dual boot . now , how do u recover vista . try to install ubuntu , if it can recognise vista and u need not use vista boot loader , its done , if not , well , lets see later....

and in the same site , i saw a xp vista dual boot guide . if u have xp on C and install vista on D , wont vista automatically detect xp ? why all the confusion given there ?( i agree that reverse is not that simple )
