I am using Windows XP SP2 on P4 2.4 GHz ( 40 GB hard disk, nVidia 4X AGP Geforce 2 MX 400 64 MB VRam, 256MB RAM, Asus DVD RW)

I use 3DS Max 7.0 very frequently, this happened while I was using 3DS max...The comp just rebooted, and when it rebooted the BIOS boot sequence was messed up and it was set to FLOPPY ( I dont even have a floppy drive), so I reset the BIOS Setting to boot from my Hard Disk and Disabled floppy boot. But outrageously, it still tries to boot from FLOPPY and says "boot from FLOPPY failed, press F1 to cotinue",.. when I press F1 it boots normally...from the HDD

When I tried to do a Virus scan with my AVG 7 free edition, it crashes before the scan is complete.
When I use Opera and othe broswers its normally stable.. when I use 3ds max the system freezes after a while and the NUM LOCK on key board also does not respond.. so I reboot.

I have run chkdsk .. no errors or bad sectors...on both C and D.
3ds MAX is on D:\

I have defraged C:\

still problem persist...

can anyone help???? asap

i think either of following cud be the reason -

1. Motherboard battery empty : it must be low on charge .. try changing it

2. RAM corrupt : look for a small utility called memtest (corrected the url) for check RAM, you can use memtest86 too.

tell us if that helped :)

Disabling the 3 1/2" Floppy from BIOS helped. Now that option doesn't come and it directly boots from HDD. But I think my system is still corrupted with virii...

Your HJT log seems fine but wait for other opinions. What I wanna point out is that 3DS MAX 7 needs 512MB RAM minimum and minimum 500MB swap file space. Recommended settings are 1GB RAM and 2GB swap file. So look into that as well after running the memory tests and replacing the battery.

Thanks Nemesis,
I will do the memtest, meanwhile I have encountered another porblem... When I try to enter the Management console I get this message..
Even going to the Control Panel > clicking system and trying to access the Device Manager gives the same error message...
I did not delete this file, and I accessed the console 2 days back, And I am in the Admin account.

MMC cannot open the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\compmgmt.msc.

This may be because the file does not exist, is not a MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC.THis may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file.

Thanks alibi_i,
I tried that 1st and 2nd method, which didn't work for me. It gave the following error :

LoadLibrary("msxml3.dll")failed- The specified module could not be found.

I am trying the 3rd option right now, i.e. copying the file from another system. It didnt solve the problem either!! any more suggestion??

144 is right .. you need to copy memtest86 to a CD and boot from it.

and imprince .. thanks to help me found out an error in my post ... its
memtest : *hcidesign.com/memtest/download.html
memtest86 : *www.memtest86.com/
(corrected this above too)

memtest is a windows application .. which can run from windows itself and memtest86 requires to boot from a CD

I have run memtest on my PC, after running till 442%, system crashed again. This is the same thing that happens while scanning with AVG or even stinger from McAfee...

Can anyone suggest how I should proceed from here now???

And Nemesis,
I understand that the minimum required RAM for 3ds MAX 7.0 is 512MB according to the website, But I have worked on several projects on this system with this configuration and 3ds max 7.0.
And one thing I have noticed in the system freeze while using 3ds max is that, when I use the "select and move" tool with some polygons.. at some point in the process of modelling. It happens randomly.
I have worked on much bigger projects with higher polygon counts etc... with the same system config...

Is it that there are really errors on my RAM...?
When I ran memtest it crashed at 442% as mentioned earlier...

that could be so .. why dont you bring a friend's ram stick and check again.
that will confirm the doubts
