Ask for a sim replacement from BSNL. They might charge you about Rs. 30 or so for a new sim.

Strange! Your phone's being choosy (I suppose it's fed up with BSNL:mrgreen:). You can try MNP (if available in your region) to retain your current number. I suppose you've got a good excuse to get rid of BSNL.

This is a problem with most of the BSNL sim cards dude.
The real problem afaik is this:
The signal strength of the base station broadcast in BSNL is low (according to safe radiation limits). But to attract customers other private companies boost up their base station broadcast signal strength. i.e., they use more powerful signals than bsnl (but it is actually not safe). You can pretty experience this with a small experiment with your old phone - talk for some 15 minutes (without headset) in your phone with bsnl sim, and for the same time talk with other network sim.. You can spot the difference - yes, phone gets heated up while using the other network sim than bsnl.

And regarding the phones - your old phone (old model) boosts up power more than your new phone. And the new phones coming today have very low radiation to save power. Since the base station of other networks have a strong signal, other network sim mostly survive in modern phones than bsnl. If you are within the accepted range of tower, then this wont be a problem with your bsnl.

Hmmmmm... Poor BSNL  :p

@OP: as the other sim working fine with your phone that means problem is with Sim card not with your phone.Better to change operator.
