My pc configuration is P4 2.7 Ghz and 256MB RAM. I tried to open the paint and it gave the error message that "virtual memory is low, try closing some application and then try opening paint". I closed all the program except the system programs and explorer, the pagefile usage was 177MB. I tried to open paint and it opened after a minute and the computer started running very slow after opening paint.I checked in "task manager" the perfomance and it showed the pagefile usage as 727MB.

Do you think paint was using thatmuch memory and if not then what was using that much RAM????

Paint doesn't require much memory but increase you virtual memory from system properties.Make sure that both the value of Virtual memory is equal.

you are correct that paint doesn't require that much memory but what is the problem that whenever i open paint the page file usage shoots up to 727MB from merely 177 or 180MB. Another thing when paint doesn't require that much memory then y should i increase the virtual memory, when all things run fineexcept the unusual case of paint.

There is a Virus Infection known to cause this issue as it tried to open itself using Mspaint.exe check *www.f-secure.com/v-descs/kipis_b.shtml

Scan your computer for Virus Infections nd if possible run SFC /scannow on your computer to make sure you have the original copy of system files including Mspaint.exe

Set your paging file (virtual memory) to system default.
If that does not work, reinstall paint, that should solve your problem.

i don't think there is really any need to increase the virtual memory......jsut scan the file for viruses and either clean the file or reinstall it

/\/\ so you also ran "SFC/scannow".

if you've then i think its time to Re-Install XP :D just jokin.

btw is this the first time you are using/having the problem with PAINT in your PC???

i think the MS Paint is creating "MEMORY LEAKS", search the Microsoft website for any such issue with Paint & possibly a update.
here is a useful link about- Memory Leaks Wiki Search Result in Google

run the "sfc/scan now" command
originally posted by AshishSharma "run SFC /scannow on your computer to make sure you have the original copy of system files including Mspaint.exe"

you'll get the Info on sfc/scan now in the "Help & Support" in your PC.

SFC is System File Checker which checks the system files for integrity by comparing the file signatures and versions in comparison to the original ones just run it to make sure the copy of mspaint.exe on ur machine is the right one.

SFC /Scannow
