Which to upgrade? Cpu or gpu??

I do not fear computers. I fear the lack of them
My present config-
intel dual core 1.8ghz
2 gb ram
160+320 ext hdd.
Nvidia 9400gt (1 gb)
psu- mercury 420w
mobo- intel d945gcnl
here's my problem i can only upgrade either my cpu or gpu for gaming. Mostly new releases or directx 10-11 games. BF3 and MW3 are the one's i want to play maybe at 30 or more fps. My budget can come upto 15k for either one including the mobo and cabinet.
Which upgrade will increase the performance?

The mercury 420w must also be upgraded if you want new GPU.

AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE @Rs.6000(should be lesser)
Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P (rev. 3.1) @Rs.2700
G-skill F3-10666CL9S-2GBNK @Rs.697
MSI 6670 @Rs.5600
Corsair CX430v2 @Rs.2100

Just keep the same case.

Your processor will be serious bottleneck for any decent GPU. So just like thetechfreak mentioned, think of a balanced upgrade and reuse your case.

Component Make Price
CPU AMD 3.6 GHz AM3+ FX4100 6307
Motherboard Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P 2600
RAM Corsair DDR3 4 GB 1200
GPU GIGABYTE GV-R775OC 6400
PSU FSP Saga II 500W 2300
TOTAL 18807

You can go for a dual core processor with higher clock speed to cut down the cost. It won't be a bottleneck like your 1.8GHz dual core.

Thanks RIGOD and thetechfreak for your time. I'll look into this.
P.s i was looking forward for the HD 6850 in the list

6850 demands some good processing power and a good PSU and the cost of that card alone is 8.7k.. If you will buy a 6850, your CPU and PSU will kill its power, go with what thwtechfreak suggested..

That will be descent.. Or if you increase your budget by 5k, something can be done..

@amruth instead of 6850 u can go for 7770.. it dominates 6850 at every benchmark with lower power consumption., ;-)

koolent , if i increase my budget about 5k.. what can be done??:-?

and harshatiyya, according to anandtech.. 7770 is is not what you call dominating . its slightly less powerfull by 5 fps and according to flipkart 6850 is cheaper

Consider the complete overhaul suggested by techfreak...your rig is way too weak to handle games. just by swapping single component...one component is bound to bottleneck other one way or other.Fill up Pc buying questionaire for better suggestions.

lol...6850 is better performer than 7770.
Check before suggesting.

Well, instead of getting a card like 6850 (which you will easily get), you can go for a descent Cabinet and Some Case fans.. Keeping your system cooler..

Please tell at which resolution are you planning to game and on which settings ?

i would like to play at 1280x1024. maybe also at high settings . ultra not neccessary.

amruth.. check the bench for 6850 and 7770 in Anandtech itself.. it consumes a lot less power than 6850 and it is 8.3k in smc.

Athlon II X3 will be decent @ 3.5K price. Its has that extra core which could help in multicore optimized games.

Athlon II X3 actually vanishes from all the shops, street or Online. And Bitfang is not much reliable while highlighting less available products. I have pretty bad experience as they sent me a cheaper ECS motherboard when I ordered a less available but higher end motherboard. Although they took back the board but I strongly suggest you to make sure before purchasing from them.

amruth kiran, here is my suggestion for you:-

Intel Pentium G620 @ 3.55K
GIGABYTE GA-H61M-D2-B3 @ 3.45K
Corsair Value series 1333 MHz 4GB X 1 @ 1.1K
Corsair CX500 V2 @ 3K
MSI HD 6850 Cyclone/OC @ 8.7K

Total : 19.8K.

This config will offer you very good gaming performance. Pentium G620 has better gaming performance than Athlon II X2 or X3 processors and when coupled with a 6850, it will let you play all the current games @ highest setting at 1280x1024 resolution. The reason for choosing the Intel processor is that at lower resolution CPU gets bottlenecked and AMD CPUs are not very good performer in lower resolution.

However, for 1280X1024, you can even get a HD 6770 from MSI @ 6.4K (MSI Cyclone OC version) which is more than enough. It will also keep your budget under check.

according to me to reduce ur spending get a decent mobo 4gb ddr 3..and a gpu...as dual cores are gud overclockers but ur mobo is just like mine...945g ..so first change mobo
btw i completed bf3 with 17-18fps in med setting @1024*768 with 2gb ddr2 nvdia 8400gs ddr2 and 1.6ghz dual core intel945dgcr..
and it was a awesome experience..
