Kindly suggest a laser printer(BW as I will be printing documents solely)for home use approx.300 pages a month taking into account operating cost such as cost of toner/refill etc excluding paper.

HP has got a printer in 6-7K range - HP LaserJet 1020. My friend's got it in his cafe which has pretty much d same printing requirements. Gives more than acceptable printing result
Im told dat HP LaserJet 1022 Printer is also pretty good though i've not seen d results myself. think u'd get it in d 10-11k range

Few months back I bought a Canon LBP 1210 for Rs.9000/- for home use and got a free toner cartridge worth >Rs.3000 free. It is fast and gives very good print outs. The free offer has expired but I think the cost should have come down very much. I have not printed much but it is known to give lots of pages per cartridge.

In my office, two HP1020s were purchased and installed recently. The print quality is not very good and very often there are white streaks in printed pages.

But I think the best bet for a home user will be the recently introduced Xerox model (model no. I forgot) which is available for little > Rs.4000/-

BTW one doubt. A nearby dealer told me that all HP toner cartridges are rebadged Canons and some of them are even compatible with each other. Can it be true?

Have a look at this link. Looks a little old to me, but may be useful

Are problems common in laser as it is in the case of inkjets? I am asking since it was recently that I shifted to Laser.

Not really... But when problems do come up, I think cost of repair will be a bit higher with laserjets...
