which format does divx players support *.divx or *.avi or both?

My dear friends.. now a days divx players are coming which we can watch divx movies on TV's. which format does it actually supports only *.divx or *.avi also.... or both..? please clear my doubt....

Ive got a Divx dvd player it can play .avi .divx .mpeg so i guess you too should'nt have any problem playing any of these formats.

DivX and Xvid are the codecs used to encode the file while .avi is the extension. .avi is the just the container file which has video and audio data in it.
