I have taken the MTNL triband 256 kbps UL connection at my home(yet to be activated). Now i have query regarding what machine should i use if i intend to say download a 700 Mb file. So what is preferable ?

1. My old desktop (with windows XP), 256 MB RAM, Intel P4 processor, with monitor off for most of the download time.

2. My Toshiba satellite laptop(windows vista), 1.9Ghz AMD Dual core, 2GB RAM one with power cord connected all the time and laptop screen turned off ?

I know this may sound to be a nOOb question but i need your help in deciding the right stuff in terms of lesser power consumption.

^^but the laptop config is far superior to the desktop config...will it have effect on power consumption.
Moreover, by longer backup are you trying to say i should charge the laptop and then start downloading and i can run on battery backup for 1.5 to 2hrs (depending on factors) and then again charge (with lappy on) and then again run it on battery.

What do you mean by "U can leave it unattended as long as u want", i mean thats possible with desktop also, right ?

No, u don't run ur lappy on battery ever. Use battery only if electricity is not available.

In any case power consumption will be less than a desktop.

Keep d laptop plugged when d/l, enque ur d/l items
Then chill out, if electricity goes off, it would backup till 3 hr max, I guess in ur place load shedding doesn't continue till 2hr stretch:rolleyes:;)

Laptop for sure, less power consumption compared to a desktop. With the screen switched off, you will get even more backup time.
