What is a mutual fund?

What is a mutual fund? I need to invest in 1-2 of them but I need to get the basics right.

putting it simply : a lot of people give money to a fund manager. fund manager collects all this money, uses his expertise, invests wisely, earns money, keeps a cut and gives u the profits.

SBI Mutual funds are undisputably giving the BEST returns consistently ! u shud go for its contra fund
and reliance may not be customer-friendly, but it sure is investor-friendly !
