Want to build a desktop that has an upgrade path ahead

Hi All,

My personal Laptop is broke. And I immediately need to buy a new machine. I usually dont take my laptop anywhere else. It was used at my home only. So I thought better to go for a desktop than a laptop. I believe, for the same money I spend on a laptop, I can get a desktop with better confiuration. This is my first desktop. I want to start with a small budget and upgrade it as and when time and money permits me. So I definitely want an upgrade path ahead.

1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')
Ans: Right now I will be using it for web browsing(Very Heavy browsing/downloading), Should be able to run applications related to my work. (Java, Tomcat, JBoss/Glassfish app servers, Eclipse, Dreamweaver etc..). I dont have any games in my mind right now. But would like to play some once I can upgrade my machine with graphics cards and whatever.

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans: I need the basic setup done for 30K.

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans: I am not planning to do any overclocking, but not averse to the idea.

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans: I need to install 2 OSes. Ubuntu and Windows 7/8.

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans: As much as the budget permits.

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans: Yes, I need to buy a monitor. If I can use my Samsung 5000 series HDTV as a monitor, I can wait a little more to buy a monitor.

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans: I dont have any components. I want to buy all necessary components.

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: Immediately.

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans: Well, I didn't think about that one.

Since this a desktop we are talking about, and I plan to upgrade it as and when I can, I want to assemble the machine myself. I dont want to carry my CPU to get the upgrade done.

To be honest, I haven't even seen a desktop being assembled. But if it is not a very difficult task, I would like to assemble it myself and learn something new along the way.

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans: I live in Bangalore. Since I am planning to do the assembling, I am open to buying stuff online also.

11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans: As I informed earlier, I urgently need to buy the desktop and cannot spend all the money I wanted to spent on it right now. I will do that gradually. I dont want to settle with an old motherboard to keep the budget. Now I can do with necessary components that would allow me to browse internet and do some programming. (I dont want to spend money on graphics cards/Headset/speakers/SSDs/MousePad right now, if I can avoid buying it now. I can even buy the monitor 1 or 2 months later, if I can use my TV as the monitor. )

@ shivakanth.sujit Ivy bridge is to be phased out as Haswell is soon on Horizon & OP wants an upgradeable sys so no ques of i3

If you don't plan gaming then you may subtract from GFX & get a FX 83x0

on 2nd thoughts..

get a 2-3K cheap a$$ GPU for now and invest in a better Cabinet like the Corsair 300R/something equivalent.

trust me, the zebronics cabby is not something youd want for a long term investment.

get a better GPU later.

Hi All,

Thanks for the responses. I checked with local merchant about the prices for the components and I have decided the following configuration.

AMD FX 8350 - 11150
Asus M2A97 R 2.0 - 6300
G Skill RipJaws 8 GB(1600) - 4250
WD Blue 1 TB (64 MB cache) - 3750
CoolerMaster 311 - 2150
Asus 5450 - 1900
Power Supply - 800
Asus 24x DVD Writer - 975
MK 200 - 680

Total - 31955 + Tax (He gave me quote of 34000, including Windows 8 Home).

Do you think the prices are reasonable? Do you guys suggest any other changes?

For now I will buy a cheap PSU and Graphics card. In another 2 - 3 months, I can manage around 15-18k for PSU and GFX. I saw another motherboard asus m5a97 evo r2.0. Is it different from asus m5a97 r2.0?

Now that Haswell processors are out, does that provide a better upgrade path? If I go for Haswell based configuration, can I still be in budget(I will get the graphics card later)? I can spend as much as 40,000 now(It is including windows 8, tax and whatever).

Thanks again for all the responses.

> Local PSU with FX 8350 = huge disaster. Buy a good quality PSU or don't buy anything

> EVO has more connection options and a better build quality. It also has better (6+2 I think) VRM design as compared to 4+2 VRM on non EVO. The price difference the two is just 1k, so I suggest you to get the EVO version of the motherboard.

> 31k for the components and 3k extra for the OS? Seems suspicious.

> Windows 8 home? What SKU is that? There is just "Windows 8", "Windows 8 Pro", "Windows 8 Enterprise" and "Windows 8 RT". he is offering you pirated copy most probably (for 3k)

Okay, I thought the PSU is required if I go for a Graphics Card. I will get an Antec 450 PSU then. That PSU should do fine for a graphics card of range 15k?

Okay thanks.

It is 32k for the components and another 2k as Tax and for Windows 8 installaton.

Not exactly sure whether he said Windows 8 Home, I might have added the "Home" part. My mistake.

If I am not asking too much, I wanted to know about the intel configuration also. Will I be able to get Haswell based system for 40,000 (Not including the graphics card)? Is it right that Haswell processor has integrated GPU?(If so I can avoid buying Asus HD 5450, that gives another 2000 for Processor and mobo.)

Or by introduction of Haswell series are we expecting any price cut for ivy processors in near future(2-3 weeks)? Should I wait and go for a Ivy machine rather than FX 8350 based machine?

Yes, you can get a Heswall config for that price, if gaming isn't an extreme priority, the FX 8350 is the best choice. the only advangate you;ll get with haswell over FX 8350 is slightly better gaming performance. Plus, with FX 8350, you'll have the ability to overclock at a much much cheaper price and a system which is more future proof and upgradable.

Then FX 8350 it is. Please suggest a good Graphics card also. I will buy it after 20th of this month(In my next credit card billing cycle). Also a VFM monitor. Would prefer a 22" Full HD monitor.

Thanks Harshil

>For monitor, Dell S2240L (8.5k) is the best offering in that budget.

>For graphic card, at 20k, adding another 2k to get the Sapphire HD7950 vapourX would be worthy.

Hi All,

I finalized the configuration into

AMD FX 8350 - 11150
Asus M2A97 EVO R 2.0 - 7200
G Skill RipJaws 8 GB(1600) - 4250
WD Blue 1 TB (64 MB cache) - 3750
CoolerMaster 311 - 2150
Sapphire HD7950 vapourX - 22000
Seasonic S12II 620 Watts PSU - 5400
Asus 24x DVD Writer - 975
MK 200 - 680
Dell S2240L - 8500

Do you guys suggest anyother changes? I will make the purchase next week (in my next billing cycle). Will buy Graphics card and monitor from credit card and others by cash. That gives me 2 months salary before I need to pay for them.

How good is Dell S2240L for gaming? I dont want head aches by playing games.

CoolerMaster 311 cabinet would be enough to accomodate all these components? or do I need to look for a better cabinet?

If I am not doing any overclocking, I dont need any cooler right? Or do I need to buy them also now?

Thanks again for all the response.
