Wanna know about sensex

Friends i dont know the ABC of the sensex.Can someone help me out how it works.
rupee value,oil prices,software companies etc.
i wanna learn how it works.
Every day i read newspaper it says sensex is going down,up n blah blah blah.I dont understand anything.
