ALSA is not discarded dude! Open Sound System was discarded long back.
ESD(Enlighetened sound Daemon) and Arts(kde) are discarded in Fedora 8 for pulse audio sound server which offers superior features like lower latency etc.
BTW,pulseaudio is afaik available for win32 platform too

I meant the fact that you can easily develope softys for lin without being forced to gpl them. you need not use only oss in linux
