Motherboard MSI DKA790 GX Problem

Hi,

I bought a motherboard, processor and RAM last week.

Motherboard: MSI DKA790GX Platinum
Processor: AMD Phenom II 920 2.8 GHz
RAM: Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 - 2 GB

Older parts:
Logitech USB Mouse
400 W Enterage SMPS and Cabinet
17'' CRT Monitor
2 80 GB Seagate 7200.10 SATA hard disks
SONY DRU 810 A DVD Writer

The problem I am facing is that the OS is not detecting any portable USB storage device (pen drive - Kingston DT100 8 GB, MP3 player - Creative Zen Stone - 2 GB). When I connect these devices to the computer (both back and front USB ports) the safely remove hardware icon does not appear nor is the drive detected.

I have tried plugging in the drive in Windows 7, Windows XP, Open Suse and Ubuntu. But all fail to detect any self - powered USB devices.
Other USB devices like the printer, scanner, mouse, ups connection all are performing normally but only storage devices are of being detected.

I have tested the pen drive on 2 other machines and it worked flawlessly. Also when I connect the MP3 player to the USB port it starts rechrging as normal menaing that there is power supply in the port.

I suspect that the SMPS is too weak to support self powered USB devices.

Any way to confirm this suspision before buying a higher wattage SMPS?

What wattage SMPS is recommended for the aobe configuration?

Awaiting your replies.

Hi,

Here is a more precise definition of the problem...

My machine configuration is:

Processor: AMD Phenom II 920 2.8 GHz (new)
Motherboard: MSI DKA790GX Platinum (updated BIOS) (Chip recommended best value enthusiast board) (new)
RAM: Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 MHz - 2 GB (new)
Hard disks: Seagate 7200.10 SATA 80 GB (1 year old) and 7200.9 SATA 80 GB (3 years old)
SMPS: Corsair VX 550 W (new)
DVD Writer: Sony DRU 810 A (3 years old)
Graphics: Integrated
Monitor: 17 inch CRT
Mouse: Logitech USB Scroll mouse
Keyboard: HCL PS2 Keyboard
OS: Windows XP Professional 32 bit updated upto 12 May 2009 and latest drivers using the Motherboard live update utility.

I am facing the following problems since I bought this system about 20 days ago:

1. USB Drive: The machine is unable to write into any USB Storage devices (powered off USB) like pen drive, MP3 player. I have tried several new as well as old, working drives but writes just do not happen (I get the error 'System cannot find the specified file'). I have tried copying through command prompt and TerraCopy but I get the same results. I have tried this is Windows 7 RC1 32 bit and Ubuntu 7.04 64 bit LTS but its still the same. The USB ports are working with the mouse, printer, scanner without any problem.

2. Display: Another problem is that when I set the machine BIOS to the optimal state, the system display freezes (gets blurry and pixelated) after working on it for about 15 minutes or so. I have to reset the machine to get back the display. To prevent this problem I had to change the (in Advanced BIOS Features>>Chipset Features) to (On Chip VGA)UMA only and (VGA Share Memory) 64 MB. Isn't this wasting the capability of the board? I have also noticed that both the circular heat pipes get 'very hot'(to touch) during the normal operation. Did you guys face any such problems while using this board? Are there any reported overheating issues with this board or is this only with this particular piece? Its still under warranty.

Please reply as soon as possible. I have made a lot of investment on this configuration but the problems (USB Drive and Graphics) are frustrating me.

Thank you.
