this is one of the strangest problems i've encountered.i have 8 USB ports at the back.all of them were working properly 2 days ago.then i had to restart my PC because of a software installation, but the PC hung midway during the restart so i had to hard restart it.this time the PC booted fine but only two of my USB ports were working. the rest of the six were dead.(i tried connecting my mouse & keyboard to all the ports, so i found that only two ports worked).i searched online for a solution & found a microsoft fix it for the problem.after running the utility, the problem was gone & all my ports were working. the problem was with the "Intel(R)ICH9 Family USB host controllers". but now, everytime i turn off my PC & switch it on again, the problem returns & i have to run the microsoft utility to get all my ports working again.can anyone provide me with a permanent solution?

Install your motherboard chipset drivers again. Keep all the USB ports empty when you do so.
