Upgrading RAM . Need Technical help

Right off the assembly line
I am using "Mercury PVM4" motherboard. and my currently
RAM is 256 MB SDRAM (184 pins) . It running my PC very slow and many
times my PC worked stop and not responding. I want to upgrade my ram
for fast performence, so please guide me. My PC is P4 and the other
configuration is 160 GB HDD and alternative use 40 GB HDD also, with
processor Intel Pentium 4 (Northwood) 2.00GHz, ASUS DVD writer, the OS
is Microsoft Windows XP V5.1 Build 2600 CSDVersion Service Pack 2
and BIOS 080012 Date: 12/28/2005 American Megatrends Inc. ROM Base
F000 Size 512KB.

also tell me if which ram I buy, 1gb or 2gb. if I buy 2gb then what is
the performence. and where to buy.

the maximum amount of memory supported by your motherboard is 2Gb [ 1Gb per slot ] so a 2GB ram module won't work on this .. and 1GB ram should make your pc fast enough as I don't see a point in going for 2Gb ram with such a weak cpu but if you want you can go for 2x 1GB ram modules. As for the buying option have a look :

If you don't use too many apps at once then 1GB ram should be fine for most scenarios.
You should note that it's not the RAM size but the RAM speed and latency & configuration that increases performance. Higher amount of RAM size only allows you to run multiple applications at once without closing other. , as the data used by CPU is stored in RAM itself.

IMo , get the fastest RAM supported by your Motherboard/CPU , size of 1GB.
