THE ECONOMIC slowdown has affected placements at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) this year. The placement percentage, which used to be around 99 per cent in previous years, fell short this year.
The director of IIT-K Dr S.G. Dhande said due to the slowdown, placement scenario during the current academic year has not been very encouraging as compared to previous years. However, it was certainly good if it would have been compared with some other IITs and professional engineering institutes of the country.
He said, this year, IIT-K placement cell invited around 1,200 companies to hold campus interviews. Only 130 companies turned up and selected students from different streams depending on their demand.
The companies that used to offer placements to six to ten students selected only four to five students this year, said Dr Dhande. He said the overall placement figure for current years stood at 74 per cent.
With the initiative taken by alumni and the placement cell, 41 new companies came for campus interview and offered jobs to students, he said. One of the companies that came was Chevron Global Manufacturing, which selected two students for its Singapore unit.
