Hi

As usual with my laptop, after the installation of OpenSUSE 10.2, in a month or two, the DVD writing speed has come down dramatically.

When I had freshly installed the OS, it used to take about 15 minutes to write a 4GB data on a DVD at 8X speed. (Actually k3b says that writing speed is 8X, but it is around 4-5X average). And now, it takes about 25 minutes (or more) to write the DVD (I tried Gnome disk creator also). Also the time the system used to take to transfer the data from a CD/DVD onto HDD has increased.

Anu suggestions? Ideas? Or the only way it to reinstall? :-(

Aditya

Hey people.... right now, I burned another DVD... it took 35 minutes to burn 3.7GB.... That sucks....

There maybe too many services running in the background, because of which processor and RAM usage goes up, slowing down the rest of the processes.

a distant chance for some config file/kernel upgrade killed ur dma for the drive.which kernel version are u using?

hmmm... clearly a problem wid dma setting being turned off. check if dma is disabled for ur hard disk first.

issue this command: sudo hdparm -d <hdd device>

<hdd device> can be /dev/hda or b/c etc. or /dev/sda or b/c (for atapi ide and sata respectively)

then for ur dvdrw: sudo hdparm -d <dvdrw device> (usualy /dev/cdrom or so)

this will check for the dma status. if its turned off, u may turn it on by issuing the command: sudo hdparm -d1 <hdd device>

then for the cdrom: sudo hdparm -d1 /dev/cdrom

Should I try and decrease nice value and check the time required?

yeah mehul's rite. don't run beagle. rather chuck it and use affinity. secondly avoid heavy torrent download while burning. things should be fine.

i am wondering why @OP wants to run a mixed system with kde and gnome components(nautilus etc) in Opensuse!I'll say-stick to one DE.there are much better performace expected.only use some few necessary apps from other library(gtk2/qt).
and beagled is a memory hog.as is untimed updatedb.

@ Mehul.. I will stop wine, but how did you know I was running it?

And by the way to all of you, I have tried killing Beagled-Helper, but it regenerates itself. Should I try and disable it from the startup programs?

@praka 123... whois OP?

With beagled taking up 98.2% of your CPU, I am wondering how do you manage to even work on that PC.
About wine. how else would utorrent.exe run :p
To stop beagle try beagle-shutdown.

Yeah... it gets pretty wacky... and things got worse today.... I wasted 2 DVDs...

Everything worked well.... DVD writing finished in some 20 minutes (still more than average), and the message came flushing cache... and then there was some error... It said write error. It happened for 2 DVDs in a row. What is going on?

uninstall beagle if you are not using it for search is the simple answer.else remove the cron jobs(anacron?) set by the distro. It sucks with low memory.

^^ Yeah.. I think I will do that... remove beagle... cause even if I shut beagled-helper down... it starts by itself in some time..... And I almost forgot... 512MB RAM is indeed low these days.... system takes about 90% RAM use most of the time.....

What about the write error? Any ideas? It's not the first time I have had such an error....

also stick with one desktop environment.uninstall unwanted.as suse tends to install all the software :x .so use Gnome or kde and install few softwares u like also install gtk2-qt engine for compatibility.

^^ No... in this version, (DVD install), installer asks you for the default DE you want. I selected Gnome, and then while package selection, I also checked all the KDE components. Actually I selected K3B and Amarok, and I guess most of KDE components were selected to solve dependencies.
