Thank you folks for responding to my query on"How do I restore the Display Settings".
Well I just kept tinkering around on my PC with the Help topics and figured that the registery settings must have somehow been altered by the game.
So I went to Start menu>Run>regedit>regedit Help and there was a heading on restoring the registry!! Opened it and followed the instructions on rebooting in MS-DOS and typing scanreg/restore, hit the "Enter" key, chose the last 'normal' boot date and the registry healed itself and I am now back to my original settings. Feels great!
But thanks all the same for your suggestions and the reassuring feeling that you all have given me, about help being at hand when I need it.

Also always enable the system restore service in windows.
It proves to be a life saver.
