Hi,

My laptop has windows xp sp2 system configured with McAfee AV, firewall and anti-spamware. Last night had configured it to download some stuff from net through free download manager. In the morning found the system in the login prompt. Tried the password which had configured during installation but didn’t worked. Rebooted the system still couldn’t clear the login prompt. In case I press enter with blank password Following msg is displayed –

The system cannot log you on due to the following error:
The program issued a command but the command length is incorrect.
Please try again or consult your system administrator.

Also at times the login prompt hangs/gets busy for a minute or two.

Went through various posting on the site regarding recovering of Windows XP password. Haven’t tried with utilities as fear about any spyware or trojan horse. Can’t login through Rescue Mode or Safe Mode as it too get stuck at the password prompt. No other user is created in the system apart from Admin. Have another system running Win XP SP2. As the Laptop was having dual boot(Win 2k and XP), replaced the corrupted XP’s SAM file with the SAM file of other XP system, but got following error came during Normal as well as Safe Mode bootup -

Security Accounts Manager initialization failed because of the following error: A device attached to the system is not functioning. Error Status: 0xc00000001. Please click OK to shutdown this system and reboot into Safe Mode, check the event log for more detailed information.

After clicking OK on the above screen the system goes for a restart.

If any one having an idea on how to get the system back without reinstalling then it would be really great.

Thanking you in advance.

Regards,
Dilip.

Hi,
The Security Accounts Manager error occurs because of the corrupt/missing/mismatched SAM file. Actually, the SAM file is one of the file in which System Registry is stored. It will be different in different Systems. You can not simply copy them and use it on another System.

First we have to get back the original SAM file. To do that, follow these steps:-
1] Boot to Win2K.

2] Now, navigate to the file,
X:\windows\system32\config\sam, where X: is the drive letter where XP is installed.

3] Now, backup this SAM file (You can ZIP it). Next, copy the SAM file from X:\windows\repair\sam to the Config folder.

4] Reboot to XP and check what error it gives.

By the way, have you labelled the partitions (drives)?

The system cannot log you on due to the following error:
The program issued a command but the command length is incorrect.
Please try again or consult your system administrator.

now ne way to retireve the system without reinstalling the OS.

Hi,
When you boot the XP, press the F8 button and then choose the "Last known good config" option.
