switch is a new product n always better than hubs. u can think it to be a an enhanced ver of hub n definitely go for it. my friend's cafe has 8 comps and 7 other connections all distributed through 2 switches.
Nobody gave a proper reason as to why switch is better than hub so I'll take a shot at that.
In a hub environment collisions occur, information sent from one destined for another is also recieved by other systems irrespective of whether the information is intended for the other systems. As a result of this a network slowdown occurs. You may not notice this if the number of systems transimitting information arent much but the result is a disaster in a medium to large network.
A switch on the other hand creates a virtual circuit between the sending & the recieving hosts & send information to only the intended host while the other hosts remain free to "talk" [send & recieve].
Even if you have a small network its best to get a switch as the price difference is hardly much.
I think that switch is much better than hub, in terms of receiving and sending data, as it provides more shared bandwidth 2 all users. Moreover now a days hub is rarely available in market.
